Question: Is this a TEMP-agency?

Answer:

I have never met a tradesman who wanted a temporary job! Okay …..well, kind of. I take it back. The Unions are a temp agency of sorts. You report to the Hall and go wherever you are told.

I have never met a non-Union tradesman who wanted a temporary job. Therefore our business model is based on finding you full-time, permanent, work. We are simply agents ..similar to an agent that you might have if you were a musician or a ball player. Our job is simply to refer you to the gig. What you do with it is up to you.

To be fair: We do get requests for temporary assignments. We may offer them to you. You are not obligated to do anything you don’t want to do.

Question: Why use a headhunter?

Answer:

[incomplete page]

Once upon a time, it was not unheard of to spend forty years working your way through the same company. You’d retire with a gold watch and a pension. Everybody would be happy.

These days that is just not the case. It does not matter the size of the company – one day you can be making a good living, the next day they’re are out of business. Companies get bought up, change hands, or change management every other day. In this industry, just one job can make or break a company.

Equally true today, people change as often as companies. After a few years in one place, you may want to strike out on your own to learn a new trade, find a new place, a new opportunity or just a new circle of faces.

As either back-up plan or an escape hatch, a relationship with a headhunter just makes sense.

Some other reasons:

  • We can introduce you to many opportunities that are not always made public. Many of our clients only hire through us.
  • We offer an outside perspective on the companies you are meeting with.
  • Advice and/or coaching. Resume help
  • Do 10 applications and first interviews simultaneously

Question: Is there a fee for your service?

Answer:

No! No fees are charged to our applicants for our job-finding service.

Question: How do I Apply?

Answer:

You can drop into our office any time during business hours, or if you prefer, click here to fill out an application online.

Question: How do I get an OSHA card?

Answer:

The OSHA-10 card can be found at any number of training centers online and off. It is a ten-hour course, usually given over two evenings. Sometimes you can find it on the weekends – 5 hours each on Saturday and Sunday afternoons. Occasionally you can find the course offered for free at a local community center – but usually the cost is between $100 and $200. The card is good for life, needs no renewal or updates.

Recent regulatory changes require OSHA-10 cards of all workers on projects receiving certain Federal funds. These projects are setting the new standard for safety and insurance companies are following the pattern, in some cases offering lower rates to companies that have OSHA-10 staffing. Going forward, it’s wise for everyone to have this easy-to-get certification.

As of this writing, ECC currently has openings in a handful of free courses. These are funded by a grant so the spaces are limited. For information and registration, call 716-851-1805 OR EMAIL: seeld@ecc.edu

Some other places around Buffalo that offer the Training are:

The Safety and Health Training Center
UB’s Toxicology Research Center
Construction Exchange of WNY (there are membership requirements there as well).

On line you can find courses at a number of locations. Click here for some suggestions.

Question: How old do you have to be to work in construction?

Answer:

The usual labor law restrictions apply: you need to be 18 or else have working papers. As most of our jobs are full time they will interfere with school. If you have school obligations, please fill them first.
