Real Returns!

CPGworks is pleased to announce that Real LaPlaine has returned to the fold. He will be working with us from his home, servicing companies in Western New York and beyond! He brings to us his expert headhunting, sales and interview skills.

We’re all excited to once again be working with Real. His energy and personality will bring back a bit of zip to our work!

Welcome back!

Why waste my time with you?

I had a caller today ask me why he should take the time to come in to meet with our Kim for an interview. He’s in the middle of an unexpected job-search, sometimes sending out ten or fifteen resumes a day. He needs to be home to keep surfing the ads, receive calls, etc.

In my reply I explained: when you send out your ten resumes a day, eventually you may hear back from 5 or 6 of them. Going in for your interview you’ll fill out your paperwork (5 or 6 times) and then sit through the hard part. You may hear back from a couple of them for a second round of interviews.

When you come to us and meet with our recruiter (and fill out our paperwork), you’ve finished the first part of that same process. But you have not done it for one company – you’ve done it for all of the active companies we have at the time and going forward! When Kim, Real or John send your name to a company you’ve already made it past the first interview to the second one!

I think that’s a huge time-saver, and in today’s job market, more than ever, time is money. For an hour of your time you’ve made first contact with a large number of well-respected, local companies who use CPGworks as the front door to their Human Resources process. Come meet with us and you’re good to go.

How do I apply for an OSHA-10 Card?

Thanks, Al, for asking a very good question – and one that is very important in today’s job market.

The OSHA-10 card can be found at any number of training centers online and off. It is a ten-hour course, usually given over two evenings. Sometimes you can find it on the weekends – 5 hours each on Saturday and Sunday afternoons. Occasionally you can find the course offered for free at a local community center – but usually the cost is between $100 and $200. The card is good for life, needs no renewal or updates.

Recent regulatory changes require OSHA-10 cards of all workers on projects receiving certain Federal funds. These projects are setting the new standard for safety and insurance companies are following the pattern, in some cases offering lower rates to companies that have OSHA-10 staffing. Going forward, it’s wise for everyone to have this easy-to-get certification.

As of this writing, ECC currently has openings in a handful of free courses. These are funded by a grant so the spaces are limited. For information and registration, call 716-851-1805 OR EMAIL: seeld@ecc.edu

Some other places around Buffalo that offer the Training are:

The Safety and Health Training Center
UB’s Toxicology Research Center
Construction Exchange of WNY (there are membership requirements there as well).

On line you can find courses at a number of locations. Click here for some suggestions.

Unique Selling Proposition

The other day I met someone who was out of work. He gave me his calling card. On the back of the card was his USP or his unique selling proposition. Basically, your USP is just what it sounds like:  What’s your secret sauce?  What makes what you have to offer “unique”? What separates you from all the hundreds of other people applying for the same job.

Rather then simply look for work, I propose that you begin to market yourself.  In the business world a persons USP is sometimes called an “elevator speech”.  In the amount of time it takes to get from the first to the tenth floor …sell yourself.  Succinctly and memorably.

The somewhat unconventional approach that we at CPGworks have been taking for peoples resumes is to substitute the very under-utilized “objective statement” with ones USP.

Write yours.  Email it to me.  The most interesting ones will get posted on our site.
