The employment services company (NYSE: MAN) says 30 percent of employers worldwide are struggling to find qualified job candidates especially skilled tradespeople, sales representatives and technicians. Gen-X and Gen-Y – Bridging the GAP!
May 28th
Today’s worker world has a thread and weave of a different color, pattern and texture. Twenty years ago the job market was dominated by the baby-boomer generation and Generation-X. Today the job market is rapidly tipping the scales in another direction, as Generation Y moves into the forefront as the dominant pool.
Is there a difference between the baby-boom generation, Gen X and Gen Y? Sufficient to affect the working world?
Absolutely – there is.
What was the mentality of the baby-boomer generation as far as work goes, expectations, goals and aspirations. And what about Gen X? How is that different than Gen Y who have grown up with iPods, internet, a rapidly and ever changing global face.
Baby boomers and to a large degree, Gen Xs, grew up in a world with a Communist USSR, nuclear armaments and threat of global devastation hanging over them, post WW II fall-out and Vietnam, space wars and the introduction of the drug culture? As compared to Gen-Y who are dealing with an inflated threat of terrorism, global melt-down of oil resources, ecology and possibly more impacting than anything, the disappearing global borders that have defined countries, nations and cultures. With the web and the fact that the world is accessible in seconds, through cyberspace, the world is no longer what it used to be. It is now flat and a click-away.
The question is – what do baby-boomers and Gen Xs who still in many ways control and dominate ownership and control over companies and corporations, do to bridge over to and capitalize on the new Gen-Y work-force?
And conversely, how does the Gen-Y capitalize on the baby-boomer and Gen X generations and work effectively to achieve it’s goals in this transitioning global scene?
The question isn’t just posed at Gen-X nor is it is just a question to be answered by Gen-Y.
The fact is that the world is rapidly morphing and those of us in the Human Resources industry are watching this and coping with the changes in mentality that exist between these.
Before we attempt to offer some solutions to this issue, first let’s get a real basic understanding of terms by understanding the distinct differences between each generation. Click on each link below and read the definitions. This is important to understanding and engaging some workable approach to smoothly transitioning the generational differences.
What is the “Baby-Boomer” generation?
What is Generation X – the “baby-bust” or “13th Generation”
What is Generation Y – the Millennials.

Chris Caros go PERMANENT!
May 22nd

Chris Caros & Empire Building Diagnostics
Chris came to CPGworks as a referral from a friend of a friend- funny how that works…. anyway… he was looking to make a clean break and fresh start- “Just give me the opportunity and I will prove to you I am someone to take a chance on” he said to me. I met Chris back in November 2008. After the interview we ended up just chatting about. He is someone who came in with your basic carpentry skills and odd jobs behind him. He learned some hard lessons along the path of life but was making the effort to change those things. I asked him about doing demo work and he was all for giving it a shot. This was his chance to show me. If you don’t show up with your basic tools and are not prepared, then don’t show up all I told him.
I sent Chris to Norb for the Empire Building Diagnostics Gowanda project. Norb, who is the foreman and a man of few words said to me, “Good worker, shows up and just works, no telling him to work, he just does.” Whenever I would speak to Norb about Chris, it is always positive feed back.
Getting to know Chris, you feel safe and comfortable. There was one time when I had a walk-in show up in my Springville office, soon after speaking with this guy, i knew something was not right, like maybe he is on something, anyway, the guy made me feel uncomfortable- yeah. Chris shows up at that instant to get his check and I ask him in private if he would stick around till the guy leaves. Well, Chris just stood there and stared this other guy down until he got up and left. Chris is someone who is always there with a smile.
By early February Norb wanted to give a .50 increase due to the great work – very impressed with his work ethics-
Chris is now Perm with Empire Building Diagnostics and will be put on their books as soon as the season opens back up. Still working on the Gowanda project and will follow them to Buffalo once that is over.
GOOD FOR YOU CHRIS- You showed everyone you meant business!

What happens EVERY June in America?
May 19th

What happens EVERY June in America?
Scientists across the nation are recording record highs in migrations of people during the month of June. It’s been noted by specialists, and non-specialists for that matter, that there is a repeating wave of humanity which echoes from every part of the nation and eventually confluences into Buffalo.
Countless reports are on record of mothers suddenly standing up from the dinner tables, as if possessed and struck by some paranormal force, and then walking out the front door, jumping into their Tahoes and driving to Buffalo.
Every year, in June, businesses, restaurants, retail stores and in fact every avenue of the corporate world witnesses men and women suddenly and mysteriously getting glazed looks on their faces, and then excusing themselves and promptly disappearing only to be found standing at bus terminals and airports with tickets in hand to Buffalo NY.
Groups of people around the nation are seen gathering on streets or front lawns, wearing Bills and Sabres T-shirts and caps and chanting verses into the air in anticipation of the games they will see when they arrive to Buffalo.
What is this obsession?
How can people become so driven, so compelled to get to Buffalo by 25 June – and for what?
Is it the Buffalo Wings? Beef on Weck? The Bills games? The arts festivals? Spring weather to die for? One of the friendliest places in the country?
Certainly – none of these things are factors?
Scientists are still investigating the phenomenon for some “logical” answer!
In the meantime, if you feel the fever coming on. If you feel some physical throbbing and an incalculably powerful desire to just walk out your front door and get to Buffalo for The Buffalo Homecoming – Citybration in June — then just follow the impulse. There is nothing wrong with you. In fact, the only thing wrong is that those studying this phenomenon are missing out on a GREAT weekend in the legendary city of Buffalo New York.
Be there – June 25th, 26th, 27th and 28th and satiate the obsession! It’s called BUFFALO HOMECOMING. www.citybration.com

Ken Paul goes Permanent with…
May 12th
Ken found CPGworks through a Financial firm that he was using who knew of our services and recommended us to assist him to find a new job. In fact, when Ken walked through our doors, it was only an hour after A.F. Wholesale Insulation had called us for someone for a driver/warehouse position.
Ken really likes being a driver and working in the warehouse field, so with that being said… he let me know where he see’s himself going and what he was willing to do to get there. He knew he might have to start at the bottom but as long as he could see a future he didn’t mind starting there. This shy quiet fellow really opened up and let me know what his expectations were and his willingness to get there. He struck me as your all round, hard working, eager to get started type of guy. You just knew that he would show up, work hard and feel good at the end of day.
I arranged an interview for that afternoon. I told Russ, “Look, if this interview doesn’t pan-out, I will find you someone else, but,I am very confident you will love this guy.” He said, “Ok, let’s give it a shot.” Russ met Ken, and as soon as Ken left the building, Russ called and said,”Stop the search” we have our guy in Ken. He is starting on Monday.” Ken gave his final notice to the company he was with (which was closing down that operation within days) and he started several days later. Every time I call on Ken or Russ to see how its going, they all sound happy and content. Working between 45-50 hours a week with more to come in overtime come summer.
As of this week, he surpassed his hours and is officially going to start permanent at A.F.Wholesale on Monday. He will get his raise, health benefits, vacation & holiday pay. As Russ said about Ken, ” He is a keeper.” Great job Ken!
Russ said to me regarding the placement, “I will definitely be back and lets keep in touch, you did great with Ken and I will use you again.” YEA everyone is HAPPY!
I want to make a side comment to all this….. we work as a team…. its nice that we can do that and not be so cut throat….. Real referred Ken to me and I was able to place him at Jeremy’s client company…. this was real team work!!!!!!!
