Great commentary Real, and I think you'd be hard pressed to find anyone to disagree with you on your premise. But I think the problem is that your preaching to the choir!

The greatest issues lie with our leadership. The soldiers don't make the strategy the Generals do. Buffalo continues to be a great place in spite of itself because of the great people who live here. And ironically, I believe the very hardships that we complain about are what have brought us and kept us together. But now... if we want to be truly "great" we need great leadership. So my suggestion is to call for LEADERS not strategy.

And if we ever get those great leaders, the first thing that must be solved is the many, many problems with our "public authorities". Authorities are created by our politicians as a way to "get things done" without having to go through the channels of accountability that our system of government has in place. There are (as of 4/2006) 740 of these Authorities in NYS - with more and more being created every year. This is where politicians and favored government employees go to die. They are fat, bloated, and answer to no one!

The Citizens Budget Commission [ http://cbcny.org/ ] has some great reporting on this topic. "Search" their website and you can download the pdf's.
